RESTORATION PROJECT

Leadership Carmel

Each year, Leadership Carmel provides a nine-month personal and professional development program  as inspiration and support for individuals who live, work, or simply love the Carmel-by-the-Sea community.

Joining Leadership Carmel opens the door to a transformative experience that empowers individuals to become more effective leaders, engaged citizens, and contributors to the well-being of their community.

Whether you are highly skilled or just beginning the journey, you will learn to leverage high-order thought and improve your thinking and communication in the flagship program:

  • Personal Growth

  • Community Engagement

  • Networking

  • Professional Development

  • Community Impact

  • Knowledge and Awareness

As part of its fourth annual session, Leadership Carmel has committed to a restoration project for an outlook area adjacent to the Scenic Pathway along Carmel Beach . The project was suggested by Carmel Cares and will be orchestrated by Leadership Carmel in consultation and cooperation with both the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea and Carmel Cares.

The Outlook area needs restoration to maintain its functionality and inherent beauty. Time and weather have eroded the ground surface, resulting in several issues:

  • Erosion near the Pathway creates an abrupt drop from the path to the Outlook, making an uneven surface and a tripping hazard.

  • Erosion under the benches makes both seat heights unusually high, and not comfortable, as adult’s feet do not reach the ground when seated.

  • Pronounced and uneven slope from the Pathway to the edge of the Outlook makes standing or walking in the Outlook area uninviting and potentially unsafe.

  • Erosion has exposed the foundations of the memorial benches and several tree roots, creating additional tripping hazards.

  • Lack of landscaping in the area is not consistent with other outlooks along the Pathway.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Leadership Carmel Restoration Plan

Leadership Carmel’s class of 2024’s goal with restoring the Scenic Outlook is to create an accessible and inviting viewing patio.  Some of the improvements will be:

THE PLAN

  • Rebuild the existing decomposed granite (“DG”) Pathway and going west, and expand the DG surface to rebuild a natural grade and provide a level transition from the Pathway.

  • Create a natural border for the patio on the western boundary using random-sized boulders and native driftwood.

  • Relocate the irrigation box to be outside of the patio viewing area and install a flexible drain line & surface drains to mitigate puddling and erosion.

Leadership Carmel is commited to continuous engagement with the arborist to ensure that project goals and decisions are in keeping with protecting the health of the existing Monterey Cypress trees.

We can use your help!  Your donation helps Leadership Carmel in many ways.  Not only do donations aid in our philanthropic project - for example, restoring this beautiful Outlook, one of the most beautiful seascapes in the world! - generous monies received also assist Leadership Carmel to continue building visionary leaders who are passionate about working with the City of Carmel and protecting our unique community.  Even a small contribution can help with project labor and material costs, class scholarships and more.
